{insert vowel here} Commerce, Intertwined.

When eBay completed its acquisition of Magento earlier this year, the announcement was intertwined with something eBay dubbed “X.Commerce.” We all know about ecommerce and mcommerce (mobile) and scommerce (social). So, a simple explanation of the “X” in X.Commerce is that it is a placeholder for the next type of digitally enabled commerce that will—inevitably—come along.

I think it is fair to assume, however, that “X” is more than a clever branding ploy. It does invite speculation on what the next initial will be and what form of multi-channel commerce it will represent when appended to the word “commerce.” But beyond that, it contains within itself the notion that all forms of commerce—past, present and future—are intertwined. While multichannel sales describes the situation that obtains when multiple, well, channels coexist, Cross-Channel commerce describes the situation where those channels actually cross-pollinate one another. The symbol used when talking about cross-channel sales and marketing?.. X.

As far as “X marks the spot” goes… Starting on Wednesday, that spot is the Moscone Center in downtown San Francisco. The Innovate Developer Conference 2011 will focus on “all things commerce.” The show will feature “solutions from beginning to end for any system and storefront.”

Solutions from beginning to end. That pretty much sums up Corra’s Shopping to Shipping practice. It should come as no surprise, then, to learn that we are joining a small handful of other players in the <insert vowel here>Commerce space in sponsoring the conference. As a Silver Sponsor, our booth will be smaller than the Paypal booth but, if you’re at the show, please stop by to say hi and trade insights on what X.Commerce really means.

If you won’t be at the show, watch this space and we’ll be sure to share updates over the next few days as eBay unveils its X.Commerce strategy.
